Fundraiser Ends October 9th: Lyman Orchards Pies and Cookie Dough

Snack Donations - December 1st Grade 

The West Woods Teachers and Staff work hard for our children every single day! Let’s show them some appreciation by providing snacks and drinks for their next after school 90-minute staff meeting on Thursday, December 1st. Each grade will be asked to participate in one meeting per year!

Please consider sending a special treat or drink with your child to give to their teacher to share with all Staff members. Some ideas – water bottles, granola bars, candy bars, small bags of chips/pretzels, seltzers, Gatorade, cookies and more!

Drive Through Winter Wonderland and Scavenger Hunt

December 18th       

5:00 - 6:30 PM

Drive through the West Woods neighborhood for winter light viewing and a fun scavenger hunt with bingo card! We will post and send a link to the map and scavenger bingo card later this week. All West Woods students are welcome to join the scavenger hunt for free! Please register by 12/16 at wwpta.rocks/winterhunt. Once students have completed their scavenger hunt bingo card, please stop by West Woods School to pick up their prize! Show the love this holiday season! The Children's Center of Hamden is in need of socks for children this Winter season. Please consider donating new socks (all sizes needed!) by bringing them to the last stop on 12/18.

Teacher Appreciation Week

West Woods School celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week

May 3-7, 2021

Every year we embrace the opportunity to shine the spotlight on the Faculty and Staff at West Woods School. This year we have all had to work through obstacles, therefore this is our big chance to show teachers and staff our support and to say thank you for making this the best year possible for our children! Our Entire School Community has thought outside the box and gone above and beyond to maintain West Woods School a great place to Learn and Grow! Here are a few ideas, and we need your help!

Students and families can help make it a great week by:

• Come decorate the front of the school on Sunday, May 2nd at 3pm. We have chalk, chalk markers, signs, and posters to make the entry into our school very festive!

• On Tuesday, May 4th, we can all write a special letter of appreciation, poem, or note to teachers, PPS team members, tutors, paraprofessionals, lunch and recess aides, custodians, nurse, and school secretary. How to deliver them? You could E-mail them directly or there will be a special mailbox in the main lobby and students can deliver cards and notes.

• Send a parent email to a member of the staff who made a difference in your child’s life. All staff emails can be found on the school website. Most emails are the person’s first initial followed by their last name @hamden.org. (Example: dlevy@hamden.org)

• On Thursday, May 6th, our children can bring in a school supply (Expo Markers, Post it Notes, Clorox Wipes, Tissues, Paper Towels, Crayons, Glue Sticks) to show our continued support!

• The PTA ordered extra Flowers (from the Mother's Day Plant Sale) to give to each Teacher & Staff to show our Gratitude! Teachers can pick out their flowers on Friday!

• Donate a $20 gift card to any local store or restaurant for the teacher raffle on Friday! Send in an actual gift card to Mr. Levy, Principal by Wednesday, May 5th.  You may also donate by sending an e-gift card to the email address teacher@westwoodspta.org.

• Let's have our children dress up like our teachers and staff on Friday, May 7th to show them our Appreciation!

Call for Nominations

Hello! I hope you are all doing well.

I am writing today because the PTA is seeking individuals for the roles of President and Secretary for the 2021-22 school year. 

Typically these positions are two year terms. This year both our President, Jess Wallace-Moyer, and Secretary, Stefanie Summerer, moved/are moving out of the district.

The West Woods PTA has a strong history of providing enrichment opportunities for students and our teachers. While this year has been difficult, we know things are getting better. We are looking for people who are ready to step in today to begin to learn the ropes so they are ready to lead by July 1. Both positions would be a one year term, with the possibility of continuing for an additional 2 year term in 2022.

I have been an active member of our PTA and the Board of Directors since 2012. Sadly this is my last year at West Woods but I am committed to helping the new executive board find success. No one is President alone. A great board of directors and countless volunteers make our PTA great and I have no doubt that will continue.

Finally, both of these roles must be filled in order for our PTA to remain in compliance. I urge you to consider applying. The PTA Board of Directors is here to help you learn the role.

Little Mermaid Jr Performance Officially Canceled

As we continue to prioritize the health of our community, we have come to the unfortunate decision to cancel our performance of The Little Mermaid Jr. We had hoped to reschedule the performance during the summer, but current state guidelines made it impossible to stage a production with an audience.  Please visit the Theater page for more information.

Billboard Contest

The Town of Hamden Youth Services Bureau and Hamden Public Schools with support from Outfront Media and the Alliance for Prevention and Wellness, is sponsoring a Billboard Design Contest. This contest is in support of the Hamden Youth Network’s prevention efforts.

Entries must be submitted by a Hamden resident youth; follow required design specifications; and have an official entry form completed.

Entries must be submitted by 10 am on Monday, March 30, 2020.

After School Activities - Canceled

As of today March 12, 2020, all after school activities at West Woods School have been cancelled until further notice.  Right at School child care will continue. 

As a result, all rehearsals going forward are canceled until further notice. We are still hoping to reschedule the show at some point, so please encourage your children to keep practicing their songs and lines at home! Once we have a new show date, we will schedule enough rehearsals ahead of time to make sure the kids are ready, but it would be great if they can continue practicing so that we don't have to start from scratch.

The Little Mermaid Jr Performances - Postponed

Unfortunately we received notification yesterday that all large events at town-owned venues are cancelled due to COVID-19, which includes our play at Hamden Middle School. This is very disappointing, but we are making every effort to reschedule it.  We will send an update as soon we have more information.  Please be aware that the COVID-19 situation could last a long time, and there is a chance we will be unable to reschedule. 

Ticket Sales

We are hoping to apply all show tickets that have been purchased to the new show dates. Once we have a new date, we will work with purchasers to adjust tickets if needed. If the show is ultimately cancelled, ticket purchases will be refunded. We will provide more details on this as soon as we receive guidance from the ticketing site’s customer service. 

Playbill

The Playbill has already been ordered, so even if the show is canceled, we will distribute the Playbill to every family in the school & to our sponsors.

Math & Literacy Night - Canceled

Good morning:

In keeping with the Mayor’s directive in response to the Corona virus setting limitations on large group events, assemblies, and meetings at Town facilities with close to or more than 100 expected participants, we are unfortunately cancelling tonight’s Math and Literacy Fun Night at West Woods School. 

Additional updates will be shared regarding the School District’s response to this changing situation as guidance becomes available through State, Town, and Health Department sources.

Yearbook Orders

Attention West Woods School Families!  It is time to order the annual yearbook.  Pre-order online or by order form by April 1, 2020 to take advantage of the special pre-order price of $22.  After April 1, the price will go up to $25 per yearbook.

Remember you can use E-Wallet instead of sending cash with your children! E-Wallet allows you to add money to an electronic wallet and not have to send money with your child to shop at the school Book Fair. Why do I like it? Because there is less chance of losing your change! Plus you can print the E-Wallet and if your child loses that, we can still look up their name in the high tech register!

Kindness Fun Run

Our Kindness Fun Run kicked off today with an exciting Pep Rally and we are thrilled about this year’s event! We’ve heard your feedback and plan to focus on kindness and teamwork this year.  Additionally, by using the Crowd Rise website, at least 92% of all donations will benefit our students!  We expect this to be a fun, low-stress event.

Mr. Page is helping with our Fun Run program this year which will last about two weeks. Our Fun Run includes EVERY student in a fun, fitness event that focuses on kindness while helping our school raise much-needed funds. 

This year, our entire school is raising funds for Curriculum Enrichment Programs & Field Trips. Our goal is to raise $12,000 and we need YOUR help!

Here’s how you can support West Woods:

• Register your student on Crowd Rise.  Learn how to set-up your child’s account on westwoodspta.org!  Once your child has received their first donation, they will be entered to win during our daily prize drawing.

• Reach out to sponsors. With CrowdRise.com’s share features, reaching out to sponsors is easier than ever. The easiest way to get pledges is to simply click the Facebook or Twitter share button on your student’s pledge page.. You can also use the Share button to get a link that can be emailed to friends and family.

• Collect cash donations as well. If you have friends & family that would rather not donate online, you can definitely send in cash & check donations using this pledge sheet.  Pledge forms received at school will qualify for the daily prize drawing the next morning.

• Ask your child about the Kindness Challenge for the day! This year the PTA has adopted Kindness as our theme for all evens.  Starting on Monday, the kids will be given a Kindness Challenge each day during the morning announcements.  We’ll post the day’s challenge on facebook as well so you can ask if they were able to meet our challenge!

• Come to the Fun Run on September 27th! All students are included in the Fun Run, regardless of financial participation. Students will be running in waves for 20 minutes, and we would love for you to come out and cheer!  We are determined to have the run outside this year, so if it rains, we’ll reschedule to October 1.

Presentation of the New West Woods School

Please join us for a presentation of the initial design for the new West Woods School on Thursday June 27th at 7:00 PM in the WWS gymnasium.  Architects from Silver Petrucelli will share an overview of the design plans for the school and will be able to address questions.  They can also speak to important aspects of the project including an overview of the anticipated timeline of construction.

Volleyball Game

West Woods staff will be playing the Dunbar Hill staff in a volleyball game on Friday, April 26th to benefit both schools!

Media Center Donor's Choose

As part of the Reader's Workshop program, our students participate in book clubs which require the media center to have multiple copies of the same books.  Our students are avid readers and the media center can barely keep up with the high demand that their reading volume dictates. Ms. Blanchard, WW Literacy Specialist, has launched a Donors Choose project to support the continued growth of our 6th grade multiple copy library. You donations are tax deductible! Media Center Donor's Choose

The PTA recently funded almost $1000 in books for the multiple copies section of the media center to support Reader's Workshop in grades 3-6. However, our students are avid readers and the media center can barely keep up with the high demand that their reading volume dictates. Ms. Blanchard, WW Literacy Specialist, has launched a Donors Choose project to support the continued growth of our 6th grade library. November Conference - After School Programs

 Registration is open for the After School Programs during the November Conferences!

We have programs available on the half days on: 

• Friday, November 16th 

• Monday, November 19th

• Tuesday, November 20

Please note: Pick up for these programs is in the cafeteria at 3:30pm.

Registration and payment are due no later than: Monday, November 12th. Please keep in mind that these programs fill up fast and space is limited!
